What Is the Baltic Exchange?

Baltic Exchange. Founded in 1744, it is the oldest shipping market in the world. Most of the world's open market bulk charterers are negotiated by some members of the Baltic Exchange, and many of the world's trades are also traded through brokers on the exchange. The dry goods index it publishes daily is the basis of the shipping freight futures market and is used to avoid fluctuations in freight rates. It also involves aviation leasing, futures trading, and ship buying and selling activities.
