A flat-topped beam is a laser or electron beam with almost uniform flux (energy density) in a circular area. It is generally generated by a Gaussian beam passing through a diffractive optical element. Flat top beams are commonly used in industry, such as laser drilling in printed circuit boards. Flat-top beams are also commonly used in high-power laser systems. These systems use a series of optical amplifiers to generate intense beams.
